Tarzan rarely had art better than this. Kane rarely did art better than this. But Goodwin nearly always did stories more interesting than this. I wonder if firm editorial restrictions imposed a beneficial discipline on Kane but a suffocating straitjacket on Goodwin?
Tarzan scattering the hyenas as scavengers is ironic. It’s been discovered that lions will drive the hyenas from their kill (they hunt in packs) to scavenge.
Kane is an excellent artist of renowned comic book fame. Thank Betty Cole that Eric Battle, that crazed illustrator is gone, his renderings gave me headaches!
And T’Zan has every right and reason to bring them DOWN, hard! This should be good for the Rush of Combat, though we may lose a handsome lion along the way….
I take it back, this does look like the work of Gil Kane. Look at panel 4. Tarzan’s left leg and right arm both appear to come out of his shoulders and his right arm is hanging in space. It is like the “How to Draw Doug” strips. “First, start with 2 circles…”. Kane had no sense of perspective. And he was known for all of his characters all having the same astonished expression.

Would anyone be able to hide vehicle tracks? You’d be a pretty lame tracker if you couldn’t tell where a truck had driven through the grass.
