For those who don’t remember this phenomenon, it turned out on deeper investigation that those so-called “recovered memories” or “repressed memories” were more properly called “implanted memories” — leading questions from (probably well intentioned) therapists that led some people to reconstruct (but only in their minds) how some awful thing might have gone down in the past. This led to horrible injustices inflicted on their “persecutors”, whose protestations of innocence were taken as self-serving lies “because who could doubt the word of a small, innocent child?”
The “recovered memory movement” started with good intentions but was subverted by practitioners who made it into a “created memory moment”. In its hey-day families were destroyed and people were prosecuted based on no evidence but these “memories”.
