Since the mailboxes are alphabetical, it is logical that “Knott” and “Lord” would share a pigeonhole. Given what we know of them, it is also inevitable that Mr. Knott would insist on keeping it neat and that Mrs. Lord wouldn’t give a flip. Cute the theme music from The Odd Couple!
Probably best that Mr. Spink doesn’t know about MR. Lord; he might not think being “ten years younger” would be an advantage then, but he’d probably also realize that he’s better off not being a part of that…
(Alas, Ken Lord won’t make any appearances in Bad Machinery; he only appeared in a concurrently-running Bobbins story that’ll be referenced later on here. But… if MRS. Lord wasn’t what you expected, MR. Lord probably isn’t, either…)

Is ‘pigeonhole’ slang for ‘the office’ in England?

Oh no. She has chosen her next prey! Or just someone that will clear that pigeonhole for her. Mrs. Lord is really amazing♡.

I Think Knott and Lord Share a pigeonhole aka mailbox. This Is common in our local Schools, and L follows K In the Alphabet.

If I were ten years younger, Mrs. Lord still wouldn’t have any interest in me.

If I were ten years younger I might ask Mrs. Lord if she had a single aunt.
