Pretty girl. It’s too bad she was bored out of her mind picking up kindling sticks in the forest all day. And, all the nearby ones were gone and she had to walk farther and farther.
T’is a rare painter picks/ a chick from the sticks/ as a subject that warrants depiction/ but the good Mister Schwer/ has seen fit to repair/ that painterly dereliction./
(Cont’d.) So she sits in despair/ in the cruel painter’s lair/ without even a chair to console her/and he labors with umber/ for a lap-load of lumber/ is his cheap, easy way to control her.
(Cont’d.) If a moral there be/ it is not plain to me/ but I must entertain the suspicion/ that when he feels the need/ she’ll be suddenly freed/ to assume a more supine position. (Finis)

Intriguing. A painter makes a picture of a girl gathering sticks. Given what she’s doing, are we meant to think she is poor? If she is obviously healthy, well fed, scrupulously clean, decently dressed, and her hands look as though she’s never done a days worth of manual labor in her life.
