This is the second time I’ve used Henry Boltinoff’s “Casey the Cop” in something I’ve written. There’s also a cop named Casey in BLACK LIGHTNING: COLD DEAD HANDS.
While I knew that gams meant legs. (I watched enough old gangster and film noir movies from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s.) I had to look up the etymology of the word to find out where the word came from: probably ultimately from Lingua Franca “gamba”, from Italian, from Late Latin. (Merriam-Webster 11th Collegiate Dictionary)
Egad! Are you pulling coat to lay the skinny on me that the tomatoes get weak in the knees for a cat that is hep to the old time jive? Is that the straight dick?
The blue coloring of her stockings actually hides her legs – it makes it appear that she is wearing an ankle-length dress. Flesh-colored nylons would have helped make the point.
But what really impressed Chloe the next day, when she mentioned this to Casey, was that he went into a lengthy discourse on the etymology of the word, and included citations of no less than seven primary sources supporting his thesis.
There’s just something about knee-high boots and gloves up to the elbow. Never understood why I like them so, but they’re great. And I think Tony & John may have underestimated just how many people have seen 30s and 40s gangster movies.

Checker and Chrysler were the last two cars designed for a seated adult wearing a hat. I don’t think she would wear that in a truck.

Casey was lucky too. Meeting a tomato like Chloe.

Those old 40s slang terms for women and their gams always cracked me up, like “Check out de skoit (skirt/woman) wit’ dem pins (legs)”…

And later that evening, Chloe had sex with Casey.

Not as archaic, but almost as obscure is the assessment of Cher Horowitz’s legs offered by her date in Clueless: “Nice stems.”

Damm! I had to look into my dictionary.
My wife says ZZTop wrote a song about her (legs)
