I would not put it past some neanderthal to have done just such a thing. Pick up some dinosaur bone and put it on another skeleton. Just to see what it looked like. People do odd things when they are bored. I would like to thing the neanderthal had a sense of humor.

I read an article where an archaeologist gave his 3-year-old grandson some empty plastic soda bottles to play with and watched him. When he ran off to do something else, the bottles were arranged in a circle. He thought, “perhaps we need to be careful about assigning cultic significance to small circles of stones.”

I think you mean paleontologists.
