It’s now currently believed that most theropods had lips covering their teeth. For a long time we weren’t sure because their closest living relatives, birds and crocodilians, don’t have lips, but they’re now generally accepted to be specialized cases, and that covered teeth are the default for tetrapods.
I don’t know if this detail was known in the early 90’s, but there is more time separating the Stegosaurus from the T-Rex than the T-Rex from us, which goes to show just how LONG the reign of the Dinosaurs lasted. Of course that dinosaur in the third panel is clearly NOT a T-Rex based on the shape of the head and number of fingers, so I’m not calling the comic out (especially since good ol Bill treated Dinosaurs with more respect than any other newspaper comic artist ever had)
This was supposed to be a T-Rex. In one of his first collections Bill Watterson remarked on the large number of fans who wrote to him to correct his mistaken number of fingers. After this they all have two fingers.
He is just so cool that he actually tuned kind of pretty dumb. No offense. (not THAT dumb. Like the one like you see something interesting, but then another is your favorite one, but you don’t pay attention.)

The Calvinosaurus That Calvin Wanted To Discover about 4 years ago
Always wanted to see a modern tiger fight a theropod in the dinosaur era.

I hope Calvin brought a digital camera along so he won’t have to stop and load film.

When they find this camera the paleontologist will have no way to retrieve what’s in the camera.

So T-Rex wrecks the photo opportunity.

Looks like Allosaurus to me, T-Rex would not have been around 140 million years ago… Just saying…

I used to want to meet a Velociraptor as a kid. Glad I didn’t make it to the Cretaceous.

Good morning everyone, be careful Calvin and Hobbes, the dinosaurs might eat you.
mistercatworks about 4 years ago
Today, Hobbes would want to take a “selfie” with the dinosaur, because that’s always such a good idea.
fturner48 about 4 years ago
I just hope he remembered to remove the lens cover!!
ChessPirate about 4 years ago
Hey Hobbes, maybe he’ll leave you alone if you smile back at him. After all, the Smilodon is a sabre-toothed tiger… ☺

Little known fact, predator dinosaurs always smile when bite size appetizers are within reach.

Such a nice picturesque shot in the first panel. But regarding the last panel, I’ve got the feeling they are about to do a double take…

Years later, scientists were baffled to find fossilized dinosaur poop containing bits of a small boy, a camera and a stuffed tiger.

Dinosaur: “Ooh, a new kind of meat, I can’t wait to taste it!” Better run, Calvin! FAST!!!
