It took Darwin decades to write the Origin. He wrote it in all sorts of times, and actually was ill for a lot of it. Einstein did his seminal work in a non-plague time of peace (1905), though. Within one year published special relativity, his Nobel-winning paper on the photoelectric effect (proving the quantum nature of light), Brownian motion (finally proving the atomic theory of matter—yes, that was Einstein), and mass-energy equivalence. Busy year, better example.

The plague had largely disappeared “like a miracle” prior to Darwin’s time, but some think Darwin’s lengthy malaise may have been due to leischmaniasis, contracted from a biting kissing bug or assassin bug during his time in South America. His counterpart, Alfred Russell Wallace, is thought to have formulated his ideas about natural selection while in a feverish bout with malaria while studying biogeography in Southeast Asia.

Darwin wrote a lot of Origin of Species while on a cruise. Today he’d not be able to do that. (Want to buy a cruise line? $50!)

Relax Monty. Sir Isaac Newton pondered the theory of gravity (and by extension orbits) by observing an apple fall on a windy day.

Sir Isaac Newton had one of the most far-ranging brains of all time. Of course, today he’s known for his seminal work in physics and mathematics, but in his lifetime he actually wrote more about spiritualism, numerology, etc. than he did about the hard sciences. The world was one great curiosity box for him.

Monty, my friend, you are unique, unlike anyone!

    And that’s a Good Thing.

You will never become a famous writer. Maybe a mocked scribbler….

I’ve written for fun for years, and have made some decent progress during the quarantine. Onward, Monty!
