Also. I had a lead soldier kit that I had to melt lead (which my father got as scrap from the Telephone Company) to make little toy soldiers. I must have made thousands of them! Hmmm…come to think of it maybe that’s why I grew an extra breast! I installed cable in new buildings while they blew in asbestos. Hmmm….that accounts for the six toes! How did I survive all of that?
Offhand, I’d say that those of you who are bragging about how you survived in the good old days before governmental regulation were just plain lucky. Asbestos was outlawed years ago for a reason, after all – too many people were breathing in the microscopic fibers and contracting asbestosis and lung cancer as a result. YOU were only playing with a small amount of it; it’s the people who were constantly exposed to it day after day over the course of years who were at risk, not you.
And it’s the INGESTION of mercury and lead that is deadly, not the mere handling of them. Again, you were never at risk – but there were far too many others who were and are.
Government isn’t just about fighting wars and crime, people. It’s also about protecting people on a day-to-day basis who would otherwise have no protection at all.
I played with mercury in school and we coated pennies with it. I have a jar with a quarter pound of the stuff now. Ohh, it is absorbed into the skin, legaleagle. I worked in a steel mill in Houston where we put asbastos pads between bricks on electric furnace covers. After the plant closed most of the guys that worked around it were tested and some of them recieve money for damage from asbastos but because I had moved out of state, they wouldn’t test me.
Asbestos was not a case of “evil” corporations either. It is natural, and you can get exposed just by digging here in Virginia in areas with lots of natural asbestos near the surface. Just like X-rays, we didn’t discover the danger right away. We have laws requiring major excavations to keep the ground moistened so it doesn’t get airborn (much).
Guys, my Mom used to swab my throat with Lilly’s White Merthiolate when I was a kid for several days EVERY time I got a cold! I’ve swallowed a LOT of the stuff. It didn’t bother me a bit. This mercury bleeep is FAR overstated by the damnfool idiots in the big brother government bureaucracy!!!
If you have many old fashioned tooth fillings you have a LOT more mercury in your mouth than you will EVER get by eating your fill of swordfish!!!! And it never bothered anybody a bit!
And then there was the time when ( a certain car company that I won’t mention by name) had to recall a whole day’s production of Mercury cars because some autoworker accidentally dropped a tuna fish sandwich into one. The Mercurys were found to contain one part per billion tuna and were declared totally unfit for human consumption by the damnfool government!!
I’ve handled solder ALL MY LIFE from when I was about five years old!! And cast lead bullets for reloading ammunition since I was about sixteen! And inhaled the smoke from ALL of that all my life.
OH GLORY BE, the damnfool IDIOCY of the government bureaucrats nowadays is absolutely unbelievable!!!!
Oh, and OF COURSE I’m NOT normal!! At least I have sense enough to point out what a bunch of damnfool IDIOTS the government blithering idiots are!!!

Anyone else old enough to remember playing with mercury in science class? Rolling it around in the palm of your hand?
peter0423 almost 14 years ago
Oh, yes — and fingering a tuft of asbestos, just to see what it felt like. No-fear education, baby!

If wolves had thumbs, we’d’ve never made it to the top of the food chain. Maybe they’d decide we’re cute & keep us as pets.

I’d eat him. He didn’t seem too harmed by mercury, I’m not pregnant, and I’m already mad as a hatter.
