Schulz made a hard core stand back in the ’70s, back when I originally read the strip I was way too young to notice. Kind of like when Mr Rogers let Officer Clemmons dip his feet in his wading pool to make a point about the people who were angry about open, non segregated swimming pools in our fine country. They were probably the same jokers who sent hate mail to Hank Aaron! Good for both Fred Rogers and Mr Schulz!
Back in the day, this was a radical strip because it addressed the vitriol aimed at Hank Aaron — who had the audacity to be good at what he did while being black. The death threats, the names, the booing. For some reason, people insist on wearing their hate on their sleeves — when that hate makes no sense in the first place.
Aaron got legitimate death threats, like Jackie Robinson before him. Funny thing was, he was chasing the record of a man who could have been of mixed heritage.
I remember that whole controversy. I never understood why people were upset. Records are made to be broken. I think it was more racist-inspired than anything else. Not that we Yanks have any kind of race problems………
Younger readers may not know that Hank Aaron got a lot of hate mail and threats from whites who did not want to see him break Babe Ruth’s record. Yes, in 1974 racism was still pervasive.

I recall rooting for Hank Aaron to break Ruth’s record because of all the hate mail and death threats #44 received.
