The history of Elly’s mom, Marian, in this comic strip, is that she went to WWII in the RCAF posted in England to fight the Nazis at a time when most women were staying at home. She doesn’t seem to be anything like the type of woman who would expect abject devotion and worship from her husband. These expectations are probably from some romance novel Elly has just read and not her mother.
Sorry, but the ‘worshipping’ and ‘without question’ things are only temporary. That stuff is HARD to keep doing. Enjoy it while you have it, IF you have it ;-)
All of our dogs that I had since I met my hubby (he had a dog and 8 cats) were my sweethearts. They, in addition to my hubby gave me unconditional love…..they are all gone now. My hubby and I have illnesses that we can be gone at any time. But I will forever remember all the fun times with my furbabies till the day I die….unconditional love….you can’t beat it.
And now you see the tension between Lynn Johnston and her (now ex) husband Rod coming out in this comic….. honestly…. using your comic strip read by millions of people as personal therapy is pretty unprofessional, if not just plain pathetic.
My mom never encouraged me about relationship of anything. One. I got encouraged one, maybe 2 times. I’d prefer the adoration of that kind from a dog than from a man. It’s difficult to be held when on a pedestal.
There was a strip where Elizabeth remarked to Farley how great dogs were and how she wondered why God put people in charge. I then noticed in the comments that dogs can be great pets, but they have also have their faults. Dogs will fight, sometimes to the death. They can fight over territory and females. Respect dogs, yes. Worship them, absolutely not.

My mother never said stuff like that to me. My parents taught by example. All I had to do was find someone a little like my dad…which I did.

You’re better off. A dog, especially a Sheepdog, will love you more devotedly than any human could.

Women sometimes say that all men are dogs. They forget that if you treat them right, dogs are the most loyal animals on Earth.
