It could have been a little escape, an island of comedy in the world, but thanks for another long blog having nothing to do with the C & H strip.

Not all of us feel changed or defeated by bin Laden, which was his purpose.

I hope an opposing viewpoint will be accepted here. Bring it on.

HOBBES, At least one good thing came out of the bin Laden mission. No lawyers made any money out of his death. I can’t imagine the money that would have been made and the writs, counter writs and counter counter etc that lawyers would have flooded the court rooms with. But you are correct. America was changed. And for the worse. An example: no young American who has served in Iraq will ever be able to look at a small child wearing a loose fitting shirt or blouse the same way again without wondering if the kid was wired with explosives,

I, too, am sad that people are killed, and I don’t know that this fellow’s eradication was such a great triumph; he spent millions on the welfare of the people in his countries, and they knew it. He was a hero to them, just as some of our leaders are heroes to us. Who knows? Maybe he’s enjoying all his little virgins having died a martyr to Islam, or so he seemed to think.

    Rogue56 …

I agree. I have not (and will not) permit terroists to change my life perceptions. I will regard them as an aberation. A speed bump in the road of life if you will.

    Lin4869 …

There is a saying in golf “that 100 percent of the putts that don’t get to the hole don’t go in” (terrible grammar, I know - sort of a triple negative).

However, the point is that you cannot properly measure the effectiveness of the death penalty as a deterent. In my youth there were several studies that came to the conclusion that people who killed others or were serial murderers did so without regard to the existence of a penalty or the possible consequence. And by extension the death penalty was without merit.

It is not possible to measure the (undoubtedly numerous) lives that were saved because others feared the consequences. The number of cases that were not recorded literally can not be counted.

Further, I do not believe that all capital offenders are redeemable. Some have so egregiously offended societies standards that they should no longer be part of this world.

I apologize in advance for letting this become an extensive non-comical comment to those who might be offended.

Hey Gnasher, I read the posts by Hobbes and he isn’t linking terrorists to Islam. He’s comparing pre 9/11 America to post 9/11 America. You have to admit that when a large threat suddenly has a face (in this case, bin Laden), the world is going to pay special attention to his every move. When he claimed his attacks were done in the name of Islam, suddenly media is going to paint muslims in a terrible light. No one will focus on the fact that the attacks came from extremists, the world finds it easier to blame Muslims in general. Is that right? Of course not, but such is the world we live in. I do like how you brought the image of Adolf Hitler by comparison. The difference in the two being that Hitler was in fact the political leader of the nation of Germany in the time of his regime. bin Laden was not the political leader of any nation and aside from his money and extremists views had little to do with running the nation. Anyhow, I hope this clarifies things a bit for you.

Jeffreydahn- I fail to see how you can group Hobbes with any kind of egomaniacal notions. Still, if his viewpoints bother you so much, you can always choose to ignore them. After all, blogs are meant for people’s thoughts. Only by sharing these thoughts with others can we truly understand the similarities and differences among as human beings. If more people took time to understand others instead of blasting their point of view, I wouldn’t have had a reason to spend six months of my Navy career in Afghanistan. Personally, I wish I could hear all the opinions from the readers in this blog and learn to understand them.

Wiseguy - pretty good … I like that. Some of the other banter here has been interesting, especially the issue of Bin Laden being Islamic. We “Christians” have our own terrorist groups, chief among them being the KKK and that ilk. We have to think in terms of whether these right-wing “Christian” factions represent all Christianity; if not, then the Al Kaida probably don’t represent all of Islam, either, not by a long shot.

Anyway, my apologies for pontificating. I thoroughly enjoy reading 99% of the comments here, and would like to meet and talk with may of the folks here. Opinions differ, and that’s what makes this such a great site.

Stories are in the telling, and the aftermath of Suzie’s story? In terms of today’s political discussion, the aftermath of Bin Laden’s death may have immense impact in the sense of the information taken from his house. We probably will never find out what it was to any real extent. Hopefully it will reveal names, etc. of his people in not only our country but many others as well, especially those who are “deep moles” or overseers of cells, etc. The steel hotel at Guantanamo may have some more visitors in the months ahead….

With reference to the death penalty, it is called capital punishment, not capital deterrent. Personally, I think life imprisonment in solitary confinement with 1 hour of yard time per day (alone) and 1 shower a week (this is what BTK is serving) is a much better punishment.

With respect to Muslim terrorists, all the terrorists of the world are not Muslim but probably in the majority. Seems to me that the main difference between the Christian and Muslim religions is the amount of indignation and vocal response against those who commit acts of brutality in their name. In the end, the terrorism will have to be overcome from within by the true and righteous believers within their respective faith.

    Comedy: –noun, plural -dies. a play, movie, etc., of light and humorous character with a happy or cheerful ending;

If they want to read political/religio blogs and comment to excess, they can go make a site for BS, ego’s and character worship elsewhere, this one is already taken as a comic strip comment page. It would be nice to see it get back there.
