Dreadful afternoon soap operas were what inspired me to get better quickly and back to school when I was a kid. With only two channels to watch, it couldn’t all be cartoons. : (
DESTINY Mom set the channel. She’s be right back with snacks and Kleenex for two.
Soap opera or game shows, the reason business doesn’t end until five.
Every time I see a kid with a thermometer in it’s mouth I can’t help but think of the scene in E.T. where Elliott is faking being sick by sticking the thermometer in the lamp to heat it up. Makes me chuckle every time…….
Most daytime TV offerings seem to be a conspiracy between the TV networks and the corporations to motivate any one who calls in sick to work to get well as soon as possible.
Today’s strip is from the 4th week of Calvin and Hobbes, December 1985. Living with Hobbes, Calvin will be learning a lot more about animal instincts in the years to come.
The knobs on Calvin’s TV change their position, depending on which way the TV is oriented. Yesterday the knobs were on the right side of the TV cabinet. Today they are on the left side.
For soaps two more will be canceled. I have watched them my mom longer. Reality TV is invading I won’t watch. I didn’t want to say this. Calvin this is reaction I thought you have watching soaps.
LX013 the blue words is what I’ve seen on BT and they had to teach me what to do. You select by clicking on the word to see a picture fophoto-bucketet or UTube come up for what thcommenteror wants someone to see. Mine will be very clean a child can see. Anyway shows up blue on my comment section. Other wise I have found out when I try to import use WEB address picture can get too big for comment box.
Hmm this looks like an earlier strip-after the Good Clone episode, I thought we were in the latter stages of the strip’s run. Does GoComics often jump around like this?
An appropriate strip for today, the 50th anniversary of FCC Chairman Newton Minow’s (in)famous reference to TV as a “Vast Wasteland”. Some things never seem to change. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasteland_Speech
Home in the afternoon from school, warm the radio battery up near the kitchen stove, fix a white bread and mayonnaise sandwich, and a glass of home grown cows milk, Then sit down by the radio and listen to the Green Hornet, or Sargent Preston of the Ukon, Sky King, etc. Wouldn’t trade those days for all the TV shows ever broadcast.
Minnow got attacked for “vast wasteland” but what really riled the TV moguls was a quote from the Communications Act which required broadcasters to operate in the “public interest”. They had refused to cover the Watergate hearings for yet another rerun of I Love Lucy.
Is that a thermometer or a lollypop in his mouth? Not much room for your feet with a tv that big on your bed. Mom put it there to keep Calvin occupied. Kids of today have computers and can watch everything they want to these days. Nothing like emotional distance and ennui. The Fren ch call it “societe seculaire”. You can have everything and nothing all at the same time - and where do you go after that?
Needing to watch TV, when I dislike what I am watching; Ordering the SAME food every time I go to Jack-In-The-Box; Needing to comment on a certain song every time I seem to need to listen to a song on Youtube…
Does that make me CRAZY?
OR Does it make me a person with a very confused mind!
For all you Soap haters out there, what was once a genre of 16 shows, is now down to 6. And all of the rest are on life support. It is just cheaper to produce a game or talk show.
I’m sick too, but I gave up cable a few years ago so I can’t watch tv. I’m surprised Clavin is learning anything while he’s sick. I’m having a lot of trouble functioning with this serious cold. It started deep in my chest with a lot of coughing, and now it’s a running nose and sneezes. Quite disabling. Then again I might watch a movie tonight. I’m not very energetic, despite the beautiful spring weather happening outside.

Yes, this is very early Calvin. And I can only wonder at the reaction Bill W. got when he put this one out…

It’s almost inevitable, Calvin. You certainly don’t learn much at school.

I use to watch soaps when I was home sick from school. They are a lot better when you have a temp of 101.

I hate soaps!!!! If you watch the commercials for night time TV, they are all soaps too. I’ll stick with one or two cooking shows.

Daytime TV (even with 100 channels) was a great motivating factor to get out of the house when I was unemployed and look for a job.
