I wonder if any younger readers can’t read the cursive writing in the upper left?

Not long after FDR died. I was then 14 years old and a freshman in H.S. Remember it all, as I can remember.

Very nice tribute to a troubling, hard time! And thank goodness we won!! I was born just a little over a year after the war, but my dad was in the Pacific when it did.

Thanks Jim for the remembrance, the presentation and the inspiring words that indeed apply to the turbulent times of today.

Yeah, and that black soldier smiling at us won the right to return home and drink from a water fountain marked “Colored”, send his kids to a poor “Colored’s Only” school and ride at the back of a bus. Why “the greatest generation” was not as upset about those things as they were the murderous Nazis and Japanese is something to reflect upon today.

I’m confused. Truman announced Japan’s surrender on August 14th. The formal surrender took place on September 2nd. So WTH does August 23rd have to do with anything?
