And yet, STILL better than the conditions that some children live under in the real world, because at least living in a crawl space constitutes having a roof over one’s head. It’s the joke that both never ends and never starts to be even a little bit funny. :-|
Speaking of depressing, inasmuch as this arc involves, for all intent and purpose, attaching monetary value to children, it put me in mind of human trafficking, which is a crime that even Duke might balk at (or rather, one that Trudeau would balk at depicting Duke engaging in; after all, as a fictional character, Duke can’t do anything that Trudeau doesn’t “allow” him to do), yet when you think about it, even TRAFFICKED children are guaranteed to get a meal or two a day, a roof over their heads, a reasonably safe place to sleep, and some semblance of medical care (inasmuch as healthy children, I can but presume, are literally more valuable than unhealthy children). So don’t think about it. :-|
I had lost track of Doonesbury in this period, and I’m just curious about something. Did Trudeau catch flak for this storyline? Well, maybe not the storyline, but along about here it’s looking kind of unseemly.

There are worse things that he could be planning for the crawl space

Crawl space behind the furnace? I thought that was where he kept the drugs. Gotta keep the pharmaceuticals dry.

Too depressing… think I’ll check back in a couple of weeks or so.

This are the same kind of “storage” problems ICE was having – whenever you treat children as an inanimate commodity.

No wonder Hunter S. Thompson hated being the inspiration for Uncle Duke, what a sociopath.

You’re not ready for what you will find here, Duke….
