Not sure if that’s a good philosophy. If God, Karma, The Universe or any holographic deity you have mentally created to try to use to cope is intent on closing that door you could lose a foot.
Some put themselves on the inside and see a window as an escape. I have always pictured that I am outside that door and found it best to accept that I am at the wrong place as the door is being locked. I may not understand why but I have learned to take it that I am being told to keep on going, and to look for the open door where there will be something better for me.
Worse thing is to keep on banging on the closed and locked door. Something about the definition of insanity.
It seems to me all the progress made in the world stems from attempts to thwart seeming fate. An important part of the philosophical scandal of humanity is that it so often succeeds.
Didn’t everyone notice Gene was talking from a picnic table bench? He also clearly specified “indoor” dining… Since we all want something good for Gene and Mary Lou (and the Squirt) you know (hope?) they are having terrific success with socially distanced Outdoor dining. There’s no reason the gardens aren’t growing, local meat and seafood are likely still well available and people REALLY want to get out. After all, comics are for an escape— humor and hope!
Except for the self-appointed representatives of their God who decided that they know what I believe and that if I do not repent on my death bed then I am heading for the bad place, the philosophically related comments herein were interesting and entertaining to see what others use to cope…and there wasn’t even a tapped keg in the room.
If I do go to the bad place I suppose I am going to have a lot of company with agnostics, atheists, Wiccas and followers of Eastern and other religions. At least Ricky Gervais will be there. Then again maybe all of us are aware of and/or communicating with the same external force but just know it by a different name.
For JJ: There was a touch of humor but I suspect that when you created this one you were at an introspective time about the ups and downs of life. It provoked some readers to give the idea thought or a rethink.
Someone made a comment about Einstein which was the impetus for me to find out his beliefs. There was a 2018 article in Prospect Magazine by Nick Spencer. If accurate then Einstein’s opinions as conveyed by the writer were close to mine and what I originally attempted to state.
Not to claim that I am a genius but family members believe so. I lost track of the number of times over the years that I have been told, “Way to go, Einstein”.*
Yes, it’s a steal from Bob and Tom’s “Long Time Listener First Time Caller.”

Um…it’s a cartoon, Admiree. Just enjoy it for what it is, and not for its theological implications.

Gene, be glad you are able to open up and at least give it a try. You are setting an example for Meg she will never forget. Good dad!

Gene’s statement is a real teaser. Is it a clue to the theme for this week.
