Hey, Elly? How about asking Elizabeth about that depression and those mood swings she mentioned earlier in the week, instead of this corporate business lingo like “The door is always open.” That’s the kind of thing my boss says, not my mother.
My mother used to come in to talk at bedtime after my sister left for college. I didn’t appreciate it since all I had nothing to talk about and just wanted to sleep.
Maybe I’m wrong, but… Sharing troubles and worries isn’t the kind of thing you can just invite people to do, realistically; especially not right then and there. It’s something people do of their own volition, if they feel like it. It’s not something that can be arranged; it’s a matter of personal rapport.

When a mom talks like that, the kid will shut down. This is not the way to go, Elly.

Elly is a (white) mother. Worrying is her cocaine.

Well, that’s a start to the honesty train. Looks like she got a foot in the door. HA! I kill me.

I’m guessing, to Elly, Liz’s foot must feel a lot like her own head.
