Reminds me a scene from I Love Lucy where Ricky gives Lucy a box of candy which he keeps with an assortment of cards for every occasion. When Lucy tells him it’s not her birthday he takes back the candy and then she says it’s no longer a surprise Ricky replys “It will be this candy is 5 years old.”
While out shopping about a week before our birthdays my wife and I pick out our birthday cards. We then hand our selected cards to each other and read them, and then we put them back on the rack at the store…..
After years of exchanging cards, we found we tended to buy the same ones over and over. So now we either do as Grumpy Old Guy says, or we just acknowledge we skipped the card this year.
If a generic piece of folded paper outweighs your relationship, it’s time for some reflection.
I have a family calendar on my refrig and check it daily to avoid missing birthdays and anniversaries. No problem with the wife but I just have to remember to get the card in the mail soon enough for timely delivery.

some time ago, I got a coupon from my employed grocery store for three coupons: I bought a birthday card each for my nephew, father, and sister-in-law

As my wife’s memory and my memory fades, I recycle. Plus on each occasion I save at least $5 and 45 minutes searching for a card.

I have never forgotten my wife’s birthday, or our wedding anniversary. We’ve been married for 25 years now.
