as in the Arlo and Janis comments today, the big pumpkins are not for cooking. They are for decorating, painting, carving, or contests to see which can grow the biggest. Pumpkins for cooking are small, called Pie Pumpkins. Better roasted than boiled to get the filling for pies and cookies.

This pumpkin wants to be stylish.

Pumpkin anything has gotten way out of hand. I used to enjoy pumpkin spice coffee when it came out in September/October, but now it’s available all year long. Pumpkin beer? Nope! I joke about pumpkin flavored vodka, but I’m sure that it’s going to be produced at some point.

Squash those thoughts

Years ago I would carve the pumpkin on Halloween and then cut it up for pie the next day. Then I discovered how much better little pie pumpkins were for cooking. And even later I found out butternut squash makes the best pies.

Mom tried to make pie out of a carving pumpkin. It did not go well.

Go pumpkin, go! Great work!!
