Bonus Fun Fact: Spiciness isn’t actually a “taste” in the same way as sweet, sour, salty bitter and umami. Capsaicin, the chemical responsible for spiciness, directly affects the receptors that detect temperatures. As far as your senses know, “hot” foods are actually hot.

Early in 1883, ten thousand tons of spicy food was thrown down the mouth of a volcano in Iceland.
On the other end of the Earth, the resulting loudest sound ever came from the well known volcano, but with a shortened name, due to Victorian modesty.
The original name was Buttkrakatoa.

Considering we don’t have much in the way of fur anymore, I don’t know how effective goosebumps would be to puff up to intimidate a predator.

How did they measure decibels in 1883.

Are they claiming that the sound of the eruption was recorded or measured in 1883? How?

I guess I must be a rare bear who likes spicy food.

Hey, not me. Not anymore, anyway. My body can’t handle that spicy stuff anymore. I eat it once in a while, but then I need Tums.

1883? What record?
ncorgbl over 4 years ago
Sound was not recorded in 1883. The loudest sound I know of was made in 1968 at a drive-in movie by a young lady from the back seat of my car.
’Chipmunks roasting on an open fire, hot sauce dripping from their toes…"

Predators feared goose bumps?

Then, it follows that stir-fried tree shrew would be a spicy dish. I’ll have to try it, I love spicy foods.

Fact. Grizzly bears hate goosebumps.

Maybe if I change my avatar to something with goosebumps the predator trolls and cartoonists on here will leave me alone?
ChessPirate over 4 years ago
I don’t think goosebumps are to “ward off” predators, but are related to the “fight-or-flight” reaction.

Caffeine and nicotine are used by many species of plants to ward off animals that way them, but we enjoy coffee and tobacco just the same.

I didn’t know they could make a record in1883. How did they do it?

And for 137 years Rock bands have been trying to beat the record…

Okay I give, how do goosebumps ward off predators?
PuppyPapa over 4 years ago
I don’t get goosebumps to ward of predators. I got Beretta to ward off predators.

How did they measure sound in 1883?
paullp Premium Member over 4 years ago
The goosebumps item is absolutely true. Every time I’ve had goosebumps, I’ve never been attacked by a predator.
That’s a nod to this golden oldie:
“Why are you banging those sticks together?”
“It keeps away the mountain lions.”
“There are no mountain lions around here.”
“Works, doesn’t it?”

Put cayenne pepper on a place where my dog dug a hole, he licked the pepper off the ground.
