The SSA announced earlier that SSA recipients will be receiving a 1.3% increase in their monthly checks, beginning next year. I had to explain to my neighbor that it actually means a .013%. He called me a “killjoy!!” It is what it is…

Got a job in a factory at 19. Another guy hired on the same day. I learned all the factory processes I could. He hide out most days avoiding work. We both got nickel raises at the end of the probationary period. As soon as I could, I changed jobs.

I changed jobs from days to nights and part of the overnight shift pays an extra dollar an hour

I’m the person in charge 1 or 2 of those nights, and extra buck an hour for that

It all adds up

I’d be happy with a $9.99 raise anytime.I am used to getting anywhere between a $.35 to $.50 raise every year, depending on how much I contribute to the annual review, so any 3 figure raise would be acceptable.

Yepper…. That’s the way it goes…

Right out of High School I was doing manufacturing work for a company, I actually started working part time while I was in High School and then went to 40 hours a week before I headed off to college in the fall. Right after I started working at the factory the company was bought up by a larger company that announced a company wide pay raise for everyone. When I didn’t notice any change in my paycheck I went to my boss and asked him about it and he told me that the raise was only for full time employees, so I pointed out to him that I was working full time and he pointed out to me that I was only working for the summer and that meant that I was only part time. A few years later I was working for another manufacturing company during summer vacation from college. I’d only been working for a month when the company started doing pay reviews, but since I’d only been there for month I didn’t expect anything so I was surprised when they called me in for a review. The first thing the boss did was to confirm that I’d only been working for a month and that I’d be going back to college in about 6 weeks. After I confirmed both facts he told me how happy they were with the work I was doing and that they were giving me a raise of 25 cents an hour. A world of difference between the 2 companies, guess which one I’d go back to if I had to.

Among the strange bits of business that continue to float around my brain no matter how old I get, is a memory of a scene from the Marlo Thomas 60s TV series, That Girl. Her character makes a big deal of getting an acting gig that will pay her five figures, and her boyfriend (Ted Bessell) is very impressed, until he learns that, as here, she is including the decimal places.
