His first human meal was his little sister, Mischa. This was not a choice, both he and his sister were take hostage by a group of men.
This occured during the second World War with Lithuanian looters who were occupying Lecter’s family home, a Castle where his father was the Count, in the book Hannibal Rising.
After several months of starvation, the leader of the group took little Mischa out back and killed her with an axe. Hannibal tried to fight off the attack and was knocked unconcious. Mischa fed the group for a few days, and when Hannibal was forced to eat some of it too.
