People use to sell their children for labor and they needed the money. The “good old days” in fact.

lost the job and lost the house and don’t want to have the ‘baby’ with them in the street? That’s the nicest scenario I can think of.

This hits hard, especially when you consider the family conversation in the June 28th comic.

Poor kid. Nobody deserves to be abandoned by people you thought were your family.

Wow, the Dads are going to need more income than the fast food job to keep this expanding family afloat.

For the last fifteen years I’ve been in school district administration, financial mangement, in small rural areas From that perspective, I can tell you categorically, that as a culture, we do note value our children. I’ve seen this cartoon playout in real life more than once. And there are paltry resources to help that child. You are helpless and it is heartbreaking.

Maybe we’ll get a new comic for 2021?

I believe we met Loca’s father (scoff) at one point, and that he was abusive and controlling against both Loca and her mother. This could be an echo of John’s childhood with a cruel father and a weak mother.

So this “get lost” letter really was a (not so) subliminal message to the readers, right, guys? Will this comic defrost in springtime?
