My dad lost the end of one finger at Pearl Harbor and he used it to scare kids out of picking their noses, among other things. He’d see a child with their finger up their nose, turn slightly away and put his own finger near his nose, then pull it away and look startled. The poor kid probably never put their hands near their face again!

I had a great uncle who did that trick. When we saw him and we didn’t recognize him he’s do that trick and we’d exclaim “Uncle Lou!”
