And commercials were only 2 minutes long. You had to hustle to even get a drink. Now you can make a batch of popcorn even if you forget to hit the pause button.
Nice detailing on the console TV. That really takes me back. Well, back to the other room. I still have one that looks like that that belonged to my grandmother.
For the last week, my wife and I have been watching ‘Andy of Mayberry’. Such great shows with good humor and respectful conversations between the characters. When you watch some of the shows that are being produced today, you know they won’t be watched fifty years from now…..if not completely forgotten by this time next year!
I wore my jeans rolled up exactly like tiny Arlo is doing in panel with the bowl on his head. Maybe I should go back to that and not care how long my pants are. !
Good work on the TV console, JJ! Capturing the convex screen, the flip-down cover for the controls, and the protusion on the back of the console. Brings back memories.
A couple of things that drive me nuts are shows that go off for some ads, then play the show’s several second “intro” to make ad-skippers stop fast-forwarding, then play more ads. “The Big Bang Theory” repeats do it twice in a row, and some, after some ads, come back to the show for one scene, then back to the ads! Grrr!
I remember the new season on network tv back in the 60’s was a really BIG deal. They would even run one hour specials introducing the new shows that were upcoming – same for Saturday morning cartoons, too. I especially remember the excitement build-up for the following shows: Daniel Boone, Batman, The Time Tunnel, The Monkees, and The Fugitive.
Sorry JJ, but today’s strip has a major error. I’ve watched Andy & Opie for most of my 60 years, and have never heard the line you wrote. In countless episodes, Gomer would come into the Sheriff’s Office, and tell Andy that “Goober says hey”, and Andy would reply; “Hey to Goober”.
My wife’s Hallmark movies are two hours long, but when they deleted the commercials before Christmas, they were an hour and a half. Also sometimes when they show new movies, they add five minutes to the time for more commercials.

How many of us remember life without a TV remote? Quite a few, I’m sure.
I didn’t have a TV with a remote until the late eighties or early nineties.

Some shows came as mid-season replacements like “The Invaders” so it has two seasons but the first part is shorter than the full 1967 run.

Ah, the good old days before actors started demanding a million dollars per episode. Their gain was our loss.

Love A&J’s occasional sly winks to Mayberry. My favorite comic strip and my favorite TV show united. Doesn’t get any better than that!

Didn’t know about Gomer Pyle, it was never aired south of the Rio Grande. I just watched the trailer on YouTube. Was it supposed to be funny?

So, why does Arlo have the popcorn bowl on his head?
