What about Rutherford B> Hayes, Petey? You got an assignment to do a report on a U.S. president?

The past couple of days, we have seen crossover references between this strip and Richard Thompson’s other strip, Richard’s Poor Almanack. Petey’s old stuffed animal, Mr. Uggins, appeared as a menu item in an English pub in the Almanack, and Rutherford B. Hayes appears in both.

Question, on a test, R. Thompson, as a kid, got wrong: “What was President Rutherford B. Hayes nickname?”

You would prefer, maybe, Chester A. Arthur?

Ah, one of the Forgettable Presidents. Could be worse. Could be Polk.

Free government cannot long endure if property is largely in a few hands and large masses of people are unable to earn homes, education, and a support in old age.—Rutherford B. Hayes

Even when I was Petey’s age, I wondered why you NEVER saw or heard Rutherford B. Hayes’s name without the middle initial. I was always curious how many other people named Rutherford Hayes there were to be confused with.

Lots of candidates for worst President, including Hayes and the others mentioned above: Fillmore, Polk, & Arthur. Don’t forget James Buchanan, Lincoln’s predecessor who allowed the Southern states to secede Or Andrew Jackson or Warren Harding, the most corrupt prez prior to the 21st century. Nixon is in the argument too.
