My first dog, Sandy, a Golden Retriever, actually caught a bird AND a squirrel that dared to invade “his” yard. My second dog, Morgan (also a Golden Retriever) just wanted to be friends with any bird or animal he came across—so does my current dog, Newton (a Fox Red Lab). He loves the ducks in the creek in the park near us and is always disappointed when they swim away from him.
Rover is once more showing his intelligence. Most dogs chase birds and they fly away. Rover is barking at flying birds which shows that he recognises them as something he chases when he can.
On a walk yesterday evening, we saw/heard a huge flock of geese – 100 or more. But they were heading north? Anyway, we both stopped and enjoyed. He was perfectly calm.

The lab we had when I was a kid used to chase airplanes.

I told my neighbor that I only put seed in the bird-feeder because his pointer goes crazy.

Chasing birds on the ground is a very short chase.

Maybe he’s not barking at the birds. Maybe he’s barking at skyrockets in flight.

It’s in his nature, Red.
