Saint Patrick’s Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, lit. ‘the Day of the Festival of Patrick’), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. 385 – c. 461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland.
I remember a radio station advertising a St. Patrick’s Day snake race, because Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. The add involved Patrick giving the snakes a ride in his car.
St. Patrick may not have driven the non-existent snakes from Ireland, but he did do a lot. I just read recently that it was his influence that kept western culture alive and thriving when the rest of Europe was buried in the dark ages. A lot of the music and literature that survives does so because the Irish kept them while European libraries were destroyed. There was a lot more detail in the article I read, but we can give Patrick credit for the fact that we still have a lot of culture and music that would have disappeared if not for him.

Green is also the color of money. THAT’S why!

I can get behind this. Much better than celebrating some jerk picking on snakes that were probably never even in Ireland in the first place!
Templo S.U.D. about 4 years ago
Patrick actually brought Christianity to Ireland.

If you’ve ever seen a snake drink water, you’ll know why we should be nice to them.

Better him than george… but didn’t Saint Patrick fought against slavery in Ireland?
Qiset about 4 years ago
It was mutually beneficial to both the snakes and the Irish.

St. Patrick’s day is the 17th, not the 14th.
trainnut1956 about 4 years ago
3-14 is, however, Pi Day.

Be kind to your long scaly friends
Cause a snake may be somebody’s mother…

St. Patrick did not rid the Irish of serpents,
According to all of my sources.
They were noted as absent before he was born,
On account of environment forces.
It’s unlikely they ever existed on Erin,
Which used to be fully submerged.
It appears that the legend has snakes stand for druids,
Whom Patrick had thoroughly scourged.
