When I was at a urologist’s office once I asked why asparagus produces the odor change. I was told it’s a missing enzyme in the gut, similar in concept to the cause of lactose intolerance only with asparagus.
Apparently, not everyone has the ability to smell “asparagus urine”. About 20-40% of the population doesn’t smell it. Fun facts about asparagusic acid available from the Smithsonian: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/why-asparagus-makes-your-urine-smell-49961252/
My girl dog lifts her leg and pees on trees, too. She is especially fond of very large, wide diameter trees. She doesn’t need to pee over anyone else’s pee because she is not competing for other girls. (Or so she told me.) She also eats all veggies.

If you don’t know what asparagus does to the odor of urine, never mind.

OK. Now your message is stringent and intrusive, but no one takes it for serious, Veggie-freak!

It’s how I taught my kids to eat asparagus. They thought the odor of their urine was really cool.
