For Brutus, it looks like the jib is up. This strip piqued my curiosity as to why one side is called port and the other starboard. For those who already know, you can skip my reply below.
my uncle who used to be in the navy used to use boat terms for everything when I was little – I remember the first time he asked me where the head was.
It’s a quite interesting story as to how those two terms came into being. In the old days, most ships parked at the port dock on the left side thus leading to port for the left side. Since they parked on the left side, the steering board, typically a paddle, was on the right side which got shortened over the years to starboard.
I once went sailing with a bunch of Naval Officers, one who crewed on the Navy Academy sailing team, we ended up being towed bact to the marina. I will point out that I did not attend the Naval Academy.
