There is a difference between not being able to have a dog because of circumstances and not wanting a dog, ever. Not wanting is dog is not something I can get my head around. That said, anyone who does not want a dog should very definitely NOT have a dog!
My wife and I love dogs and cats. However, 2017 was a bad year for us. I buried 2 dogs and 2 cats. After burying my last dog with the help of one of my sons and a grandsons, I broke down causing both of them to get choked up. I told my wife I just can’t do this anymore, It’s just too damn hard. I sure miss having a couple of goof ball running around the house.
I am sorry for your losses. I have learned to tell myself that dogs don’t live as long as human so that we can love more of them. I adopted my current dog at (her) age 6. I hope she lives to be an old dog, but any time I get with her is a true gift. They give so much of themselves to us, and many need a home.
“I am your dog, my purpose is to serve and protect you. So long as I live, I will stand between you and danger. So long as I live, no harm will come to you. In return, I ask only food and shelter you can spare.”
My cat. My cat watches while I sleep and always has to accompany me to the bathroom. Not that I wouldn’t mind having a dog but y’all are a lot more work and worry, especially for those who travel a lot for their work.
Well, my cats take care of those, but you DO need a dog to knock over the trash can, pull everything out on the floor for inventory, and make sure nothing even marginally edible got thrown away.
And some people fear or dislike dogs. Including me. Was very badly bitten once. So, yea, not a bad on dogs in general but people like me do exist. And my cats fulfill the functions mentioned.

One of our dogs always guarded Mom when she was in the bathroom by lying right in front of the door.

Easy. Sometimes, people aren’t in right surroundings to keep a dog.

Creepy old men can do the job every bit as good as a dog.
