Carmen: thrown out into the wilderness...
Intoxicated by power, our own arrogance led us out here.
We had it coming.
Elephant: are we a permanent majority yet?!?!
Carmen: hubris 2.0.
Fortunes rise and fall. The republicans just have to remember that it is the democrats that are their opposition. If anyone can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, it is them. Besides, the dems are completely cowed, just threaten to call them names and they cave.
The reason why the Republicans are in such bad shape is that they had control, and proceeded to ruin the best economy that existed in decades, attacked a country based on fabricated information, imposed their own narrow-minded religious beliefs on the rest of the country, and had a human rights record that rivals that of several dictatorships. The Republicans have proven that all they stand for is making more money for the rich at the expense of everyone else. The main reason why the Democrats usually don’t respond is because we’re too busy laughing at just how utterly stupid and idiotic the Republicans have been.
More and more people are moving away from the GOP to Independent for reasons good and bad. The remaining Repubs are in danger of clinging with a death grip to the exact issues that have driven away millions of voters.
As the surviving GOP becomes ever more shrill on topics such as abortion and gay rights, I don’t see them becoming secular again. And it was unprincipled, pragmatic Repubs, indistinquishable from the Dems, who started the piecemeal but accelerating nationalization of the American economy.
There needs to be a secular, freedom-oriented, pro-capitalism, limited-government party again, but if it isn’t the GOP, I don’t see another on the horizon. This could give the Dems decades of not just tax-and-spend but of command-and-control.
(Forget about the Libertarians. They claim a belief in freedom while purposely avoiding defining it, which is how they can include anarchists, druggies, survivalists, and child molesters and not see what is wrong with that.)
Actually, WWH, it’s the Republican establishment that’s cowed. They’re afraid that any criticism of the current president, no matter how well-founded, will cause them to be portrayed by Democrats and the media as racist. Which, it will, but that’s not the point. They’ve forgotten that the truth begs nobody’s pardon and most people respect it for that very reason.
The Republicans spent like drunken sailors (my apologies to drunken sailors) and all concerns about the deficit went out the window. The Republicans ran their “moderate” candidate and what did it get them? Worrying about apealing to more groups isn’t the answer. Both President Bush and Senator McCain tried to bend over backwards to apease the Hispanic vote by trying to ram amensty down the public throats and still they did not vote for them. If Republicans want to be successful they need to adopt a principled, consistent, and conservative platform in order to win.
Too durn bad that the American people are caught between the Republicans and the Democrats. Both sides will drag their feet and let things get worse rather than cooperate with the other. The Soviet leader V.I. Lenin had a saying, “The worse things are, the better they are” when he was fighting the Czar. As long as things we’re going bad for the Czar it made Lenin and his boys look good. Both the Republicans and the Democrats have learned Lenin’s lesson well.
Forget about pschearer. This genius claims a belief in freedom while purposely avoiding defending it, which is how ‘e can exclude anarchists, druggies, survivalists and … well, child molestation *is* harmful, but that isn't really what you're talking about, is it?
The Republicans said “Government is the problem, not the solution”, and when they WERE the government they went out of their way to demonstrate their point.
tobybartels: What did I say that makes you think I wouldn’t defend the rights of of “anarchists, druggies, survivalists…”? You confuse my disdain for them with an unwillingness to defend their right to be wrong. For example, I’m totally against the use of drugs but I also oppose anti-drug laws (excepting protections for children). My position on freedom is consistent (as opposed to the Libertarians who don’t care to define it).
As for sarcastically calling me a “genius”, do you say that because the designers of this site for some stupid reason decided to change “PRO” for the people who actually pay for the service to “GENIUS”? I’m way too smart to think I’m a genius, let alone label myself as such.
