The first time I ever encountered the question “How’s tricks?” was on the Merry Marvel Marching Society 45-rpm record in 1964, where Stan Lee posed it to Chic Stone. I couldn’t fathom what he was talking about, but was left wondering whether Stone was married to someone named Trixie.

You asked.

The origin of “How are you?” is “Should I keep away from you to avoid The Plague?”.

Never ask me, “How are you?”, ’cause I might tell you.

One coworker always said, “How are you?” I would often reply, “Terrible,” and she would continue, “That’s great,” not listening to me.

I great most of my female friends with “how’s tricks” Of course most of my friends have the morals of an alley cat so it’s completely acceptable.

And yet turning tricks means something different entirely.
