My dad never saw the point to A/C. It was 108 the day he was born, so I guess he was used to it from the git-go. When he accepted a call to a parish in North Carolina, they purchased a lovely home, but the heating system seemed to have been by Noah, himself. I asked it they were going to install A/C at the same time, but he just snorted “Summer is supposed to be hot.”
“Daddy, why are you putting a furnace in this place?”
“That’s enough of that, young lady,” sez the Good Father.
Tied the record high temperature here yesterday and set to beat that by 9F today. I’m cooling the house down to 75F before sunrise. That’s about what it is outside, but this house was not designed for natural airflow, so leaving the windows open last night didn’t help.
When I was a kid, my father would never adjust the heat or AC – for anything. All winter long it was “If you’re cold out on a sweater!”, in the summer it was “Of course you’re hot, you’re wearing 6 sweaters!” Dad was a peach…
The Mrs is a Scot. She is used to wearing clothing appropriate for the season. My sister was an architect and I am used to having insulation just a bit better than what is recommended for the area and black out curtains and double and even triple paned glass where needed. We are comfortable year round without having to run anything too hot or too cool because the house is well insulated and attic fans and stuff. Shorts and t-shirts are ok, but not when it’s snowing outside.

This is not the time to be so stingy, Adam. Heat stroke will do nobody any good.

We used a bit of stimulus money to buy a swamp cooler for our mobile home
A few days later a massive heat wave hit and stayed for over a week
The swamper is more energy efficient than the window units we used last year, and it keeps the house cooler
Energy bill is still going to be more than I want it to be

A time is coming when you’ll have to buy 5-minutes of air conditioning in a little booth at outdoor public faires and that guy will make a fortune.
