The local Uni rents their stadium out to other programs (including things like high school band contests). And covid vaccinations. And any group who can convince them (probably includes payment, but I don’t know for sure), provide appropriate insurance certification and fit into the schedule.
And two one-time “nose bleed” seats for non-students cost my whole entertainment budget for the year… or maybe more. So, I’ve never actually smelled it…
Sadly not used as much as when I was a lad long ago. I love to see the old BBQ pits around older homes. Unused, maybe have a plant to two on them. Just like the patios and decks. All that beauty and outdoor space—I hardly never see it being used. Sigh . . .
Neighbours had a big birthday and we helped with the party. BBQ and smoker were used almost full time from Friday night until Sunday afternoon. We cooked burgers, sausage, kebabs, chickens and a few burnt finger bacon surprises. And grilled veggies as needed. As football approaches there will be more use as the summer and fall go along. Grey Cup in December and the BBQ will be busy until at least then. And smoked turkey this year for USA Thanksgiving.
Don’t get me wrong: I love barbecue grills. Especially other people’s barbecue grills. I’ve mentioned before that I’m one of those hippie vegan types. But just because I can’t eat meat doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the smell of it cooking. I enjoy the smell of it cooking a LOT, but not enough to grill perfectly good meat, smell it and throw it away.
So I love walking through the neighborhood and coming across the scent of some protein on the grill. It’s not even a frustrating reminder of what I’m missing out on. It just smells good. It smells wonderful, and that’s plenty enough to make me happy.
Which, conveniently enough, ties back into the football-stadium thing. I’ve always been baffled by spectator sports. Why watch other people do something you yourself aren’t able to, or for whatever reason won’t do? Well, maybe there’s a parallel there. Maybe I understand a little now. Thanks, grilling neighbors!
