In Swedish, there’s an old proverb that says “dearly loved children have many names.” I guess the same is true of dearly loved housepets. Ours (a cat and a dog) both answer to about 5 or 6 “pet names” plus their own names. Of course they even know each other’s names, too. If you say “Chester,” the dog (Candy) goes on high alert looking all around to see where that cat is. He’s bigger than she is and loves to tease her. And, yeah, he knows her name, too.

Most dogs live by the rule, “I don’t care what you call me. Just don’t call me late to dinner.”

Consistency is important if you do not want to have neurotic pets. It’s up to you.
