Texas was founded on stealing land from Mexico, duh. Slavery was a side issue.

I remember (or possibly hallucinated) an SNL sketch back in the Eddie Murphy era where there was a plantation for white folks who could “work off their white guilt”. I distinctly recall cast member Mary Gross singing “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen”. Can’t seem to find it. Not showing up on the transcripts page either. Anyone remember this? Am I insane? More accurate question: am I wrong?

Although Anglo-Americans were allowed to settle there in limited numbers, many of the white settlers were illegal aliens crossing the Red River into Mexico (Texas). Outraged that they weren’t allowed to keep their enslaved people, they founded a “free republic” and pushed the Mexican settlers off the good land. Oh, and Davy Crocket didn’t die defending the Alamo, he surrendered and was executed.

There was a bit of drama involving Ruben Bolling this week, when the Pulitzer committee decided not to award a prize for political cartooning this year.-————————————————————————————————————-Bolling, whose real name outside of the cartooning profession is Ken Fisher, was recognized for his comic “Tom the Dancing Bug,” including its depiction of life in Trump’s America. He told The Washington Post that he is “deeply thrilled” by the honor and doesn’t want anything else “to diminish my appreciation for that.”

But the decision not to name a winner, he said, “is frustrating, baffling and wrongheaded.”

Added Bolling: “I’ve honestly never been insulted by losing an award — I don’t feel I’ve ever deserved anything. But I am insulted by this decision by the board, on behalf of myself and all cartoonists.”

Republicans: “You can’t tear down statues! That’s erasing history!”

Liberals: “We know, you complained about that last week. We’re just going to add critical race theory to the curriculum so that kids can understand the impact of race relations in-”

Republicans: “HEY! Whoa! Hey! C’mon! Hey. Whoa. Hey… Whoa… C’mon.”

    Leftists: “Oh, you mother-”

“Unlike the left, we embrace free thought and debate,” says GOP leader Kevin McCarthy. But if you admit Trump lost the election, you have to go. And we can’t allow your teacher to talk about people being gay, and your doctor can’t discuss abortion with you, and your school should teach creationism, and your teacher mustn’t cover critical race theory.

and developed the strategy of electing ignorant republicans to office: case in point, representative Louis Gohmert, who wants to alter the orbit of the moon to counteract the effects of global warming. Then there’s governor Stupid….

We moved to Ohio because I had a project there. On the flight out my wife sat with a young black woman who told her, “Whatever you do, don’t move to Cuyahoga falls. We call it Caucasian Flats because it is so racist.”.

I was raised in Texas, had a semester of Texas history around 4th grade level, another in high school, and took another in college as an elective, figuring it was an easy A, since by now I could name everyone at the Alamo. And, it wasn’t until I actually did some reading as an adult that I figured out that the Alamo was fought because the Mexican government changed their constitution to outlaw slavery, and the battle was actually fought to protect it.

Excerpt from the Declaration of Causes of the 1861 Secession Convention of Texas: “She (Texas) was received into the confederacy with her own constitution, under the guarantee of the federal constitution and the compact of annexation, that she should enjoy these blessings. She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery – the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits – a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time.” If teachers are allowed to teach the Declaration of Independence, they should also be allowed to teach this.

Guilt has nothing to do with it. We have to go through the tedious but necessary activity of removing the legacy of slavery from our institutions and customs. It’s hard work that will take a long time. It’s also mandatory in my book.

Won’t teach history? Won’t teach truth? Poor country is committed to repeating the same crap over and over. The rest of the thinking world weeps over the dilemma that is the USA.
