Arlo is probably better at the morning prep work, bussing tables, evening clean up, and analyzing the business side. Not crunch time cooking and plating.
Arlo is just another older weekend warrior. Too much time at whatever job he is doing sitting in front of a computer typing reports and realizing that he, on Saturday afternoon, he can no longer take a football tackle from his young adult son.
Many don’t realize how physically demanding work in a commercial kitchen can be. Even though I had the experience and skills that 40 years in the industry had given me, I found that as I approached my mid 60’s I was unable to keep up the pace. Arlo is going in cold and shouldn’t be beating himself up, being a good cook at home is miles away from dealing with demands of a restaurant.
As Toby Keith would sing this verse……I used to be hell on wheelsBack when I was a younger manNow my body says “You can’t do this boy”But my pride says “Oh yes, you can”… “Iain’t as good as I once wasThat’s just the cold hard truthI still throw a few back, talk a little smackWhen I’m feelin’ bullet proofSo don’t double-dog dare me now‘Cause I’d have to call your bluffI ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good onceAs I ever wasMay not be good as I once was, but I’m as good onceAs I ever was.”
Floundering incompetent males , they are included in many ads, comics, stand up comedies. Mainstream media has turned against the Parental figure and that’s not good for the family institution. I just turned 62 last february and during most of my lifetime us men were respected, just not sure what the future holds for my two grandsons.

PTLD, post traumatic lunch disorder. Arlo couldn’t get the orders right during the lunch rush.

He laughed when they said it couldn’t be done; with a smile, he got right to it. He tackled that thing that couldn’t be done…and couldn’t do it.

I don’t like that this story arc has become just another floundering incompetent male.

Arlo is tired and isn’t about to display “false bravado.”

The “call back” is a staple in a good comic set, and even if it’s been over 10 years today’s revisits 2010.01.07.

Put Arlo on salads. Still important enough to be of real assistance, but a lot less pressure.
