I think people jump to a racist conclusion too quickly. Mostly people are just lazy. I have a last name that people have the hardest time pronouncing even though it is not at all complicated.
I think we forget how much we operate on auto pilot. Life is hard. We resist unconsciously anything that takes us out of our flow of established pattern. Itâs a human tendency, nothing more, nothing less.
The other day we had a yard sale, and this white American guy came in dressed in a kilt and other regalia and introduced himself with a Spanish name. He told me his name four times before I finally got it. He finally said, like taco but with a âPâ. Oh, Paco! I said.
Is that a difficult name? Nope, but it just wouldnât click.
Now If I had insisted on calling him Bob, well yeah, that would make me a lazy douche.
My best friend in grade school was named Noor, and where her people got it from stumps me to this day, as they lived in a very rural area, the nearest library was in the next county, and none of us had a tv, so it wasnât likely that they would have had any contact with the Middle East.

It gets on my nerves when people do that, even when itâs not their fault.

It seems to me that Noorâs reaction should be âYou can call me Nancy all you want, but I will only answer to Noor.â

When my father immigrated to the United States the immigration officer âAmericanizedâ his last name because his real name sounded âfunnyâ.
