Time is a slippery thing. You think you’re paying attention and then you hear how many Yankee and White Sox players were not born when Field of Dreams premiered.
The arrow of time can not be turned. But if it could be turned would you want to live your life over again with the knowledge you have now? Would it be better or worse? For certainly, your path would not be the same.
I hope to God it’s Gus suggesting to Arlo that he and Janis just freaking leave a house where they apparently don’t have any life (job, friends, church, clubs, friendly neighbors, etc), and move by their damn kids, because time is running out and they only have one kid!
If you get to a certain age, especially if you have any health problems, you start to wonder what will happen when your gone. It’s why people write wills.
Don’t worry about how little Time you have left Gus. Fully enjoy whatever you have left for as long as you can.
Let retirement be your Second Childhood. Only now you have the resources and freedom to do what you want, without having to let anyone tell you not to.
The only thing holding you down is the pain you carry from all those mistakes of your foolish youth.
Which is why Mary Lou forced Gus to stop working, because he was going to die on the job very quickly. At least that earned him a few more years, but you can’t repair years of hard work and the IOY you gave your body are coming back to roost.

I used to read Jimmy’s blog exclusively, and I noticed that several of the posters disappeared over the years, never to return.
I am seeing the same occurrence here.
In sum, each of us can say, “Je suis Gus.”

On a technical note, I love how JJ and the colorist captured the glow of the cigar in the first panel.

Can’t do anything about that last thing. Best advice though would be to use it whatever you have left wisely…..

Smoking cigars will only shorten his time. And make him smell awful!

Gene and MaryLou get to choose how to live their lives, Gus. I hope he isn’t going to try to bribe her into starting a bigger restaurant.

I had the opposite take. Let them live their lives. His relationship with them is more important.

Now, why do I get the feeling Gus is hiding something?
