When I moved from my hometown in PA in ’92 we had two pawnshops, in an economically depressed area. When I went back in ’03 it had SEVEN by my count, a prime indicator of economic failure. This led the city to a corrupt (the mayor and his cronies are in the federal pen) frenzy of entire block demolition and the construction of luxury housing and office towers to remain mostly empty today, along with an 11 million dollar hockey arena for a second string team. The wholesale razing and replacing is still going on despite the lack of willing tenants,

My neighborhood has a check-cashing and payday loan store between the pawn shop and the rent-to-own clip joint.

Some parts of town have the pawn shop inside the pawn shop where the owner pawned it. :)
