Good points all week. It’s like when I took my kids to Sesame Street something around 20 years ago and they had these gigantic (plastic, I think) appliances. One was a turntable, and I wondered how many kids knew what that was.
And to @fredd13 ‘s point, yes an actual camera is better but I can go to museums or the zoo and maybe see two cameras. Outside of that, everyone’s using their phone. The kid might never have seen one (or it never registered).
So, I admit I’m bitter that the newer ‘phones’ can take some pictures that rival those taken by my SLR. But I do worry that in their rush to get photos they fail to consider the saftety range allowed by those SLRs, i.e. don’t approach the woolly sheep in Yellowstone; bison are dangerous.
So a smartphone can take a “photo” better than a camera. But it doesn’t let you compose a picture and adjust the exposure, focus, mood… to get the image you want. Like all the other electronic conveniences, you do what the computer tells you to and accept what you’re given. Bring it on, Skynet!

OK, now either that one’s implausible or the kid’s supposed to be ignorant. Phones are great for casual stuff, but professionals use cameras.

If all tech icons look like a smartphone how will we know what they mean?

The icon could have been of a Brownie Box camera.

just look up 20th century inventions and you can see all of the things your parents grew up with.

How will little guy ever know what the “save” icon is? Now that’s something we hadly ever see anymore – the 3" floppy in a case.
