I liked the Gene Wilder version for it lightheartedness, but the Depp version had a good backstory and I think was better cinematography wise. The squirrels were actual squirrels not CGI, btw.
Loving this comic strip bc i have always loved willy wonka its literally a clasic. If u had to decide between the two i would pick the origional mostly because of the suspenceful ending. 7/10Ps. This is my first review how do you like it?
While I thought Gene Wilder’s version of Willy Wonka was okay, the rest of the movie was terrible, especially the horrible songs. The later version did a better job of capturing the spirit of the book — although I could have lived without the absurd backstory they gave to Willy Wonka.
Is no one concerned about the chicken scene in the Gene Wilder version that was supposed to be a G-rated movie, even with the more lenient standards for the G-rating in the early 1970’s?
That’s the fact, Jack! Gene Wilder improvised the scene where he staggers to the factory gate with a cane, pokes the cane into the cobblestones, and does a tumble. Totally unexpected!

I’m fond of the Wilder Wonka too.

Agree with all — but you have to admit Depp redeemed himself as Jack Sparrow.

The use of the word “boomer” will cause this strip to age like milk

Nice job, wonka.

I would’ve said “Roald Dahl/Quentin Blake version. It’s actually a book, you know”. Even if it probably wouldn’t have earned me as much candy

Weird to see ‘boomers’ in a big nate strip lol

I personally think that both Willy Wonka portrayals were really, really creepy and dumb.

I kinda liked the Johnny Depp one, but I haven’t watched the Gene Wilder version, so I can’t judge.

Haven’t seen either version, but I would expect Wilder would fit the character better.

That is smooth. I can’t believe Teddy knows his boomers. I mean, look at all that candy! I hope I can get that kind of luck tomorrow.

Boomer here, and I liked both portrayals. Like the Doctor, Wonka CAN be played by more than one actor.

I do have a point, Johnny Depp´s version sucked.

I thought the Depp version was much better! Stayed truer to the book.

I saw both movies, and actually one of the better aspects of the Johnny Depp version was Helena Bonham Carter’s portrayal of Charlie’s mother.
Julian Dieter about 3 years ago
Honestly, the Jonny Depp version is more accurate to the book, therefore, better, to me at least. Wilder still good, but Depp more accurate.

It was a fun sort of cringe, the way he used boomers. I like it.
