Laura should not act embarrassed about good reviews as if she doesn’t deserve them if Adam doesn’t get them too. Wasn’t she proud of him when he was doing well?
Actually, he feels awful about himself. He was happy for her before the review. He hasn’t received any recognition, unlike his wife. He is questioning his whole existence. He needs some love and reassurance. And maybe a shrink.
Ditch digger! My Mom used to tell me I’d be stuck digging ditches if I didn’t study in school. I’ve never seen ditch digging on LinkedIn. Is that a career option? What would a good resumé look like?
Adam has an apparently successful career as a writer for magazines, websites, PR, etc. Maybe he should stick to that and leave the novels to Laura. Besides, as I always say, the difference between (most) authors and a successful writer is that writers get regular checks in the mail.
Try it, you may find you are a way better ditch digger than you are a writer. There’s no harm in finding what you are good at, even if it surprises you.

I use to dig ditches for a construction company. I was the first female to that job. That was back about 1970.

I think Adam is going through a confidence crises. He’s doubting himself, not necessarily being jealous of his wife.
