In the next chapter he disparages gazpacho and I lose interest in the book.

That’s actually what the book is about—a guy being very self-absorbed.

This comic is far superior to the actual text. It tells the exact same story, while sparing us many, many thousands of words of terrible prose.

I worked part-time and studied full-time all the way through college. I couldn’t afford to depend on my ego to get me through life. :)

I made a policy decision when I was a young man never to read a word Ayn Rand wrote, but 15 years ago I figured I could (or maybe should) watch the movie “The Fountainhead” (the Gary Cooper one, in case they’ve since made another). The fundamental ideas were as repellant as I’d imagined, and the dialogue was laughably bad. And since Rand wrote the screenplay herself, I’m not going to assume I’m being unfair to her.

Of course, one of her arguments is that no worthwhile creative work is ever done through collaboration, so perhaps if she hadn’t just written the screenplay but directed the film, operated the cameras, designed all the sets and costumes herself, and played all the principal roles it might have turned out better…
