National Mulligan Day. National Mulligan Day is observed annually on October 17th. In golf, a mulligan happens when a player gets a second chance to perform a specific move or action. The day offers an opportunity for giving yourself a second chance or, as some people call it, a “do-over.” According to the United States Golf Association (USGA), three different stories explain the origin of the term. The first derives from the name of a Canadian golfer, David Mulligan, a one-time manager of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, who played golf in the 1920s. A different, later, etymology gives credit to John A. “Buddy” Mulligan, a locker room attendant at Essex Fells C.C., New Jersey, in the 1930s. Another story, according to author Henry Beard, states that the term comes from Thomas Mulligan, a minor Anglo-Irish aristocrat and a passionate golfer who was born in 1793.
I have a card my friend and I pass back and forth. It started because one year I was late with her birthday present. The card is plain white. Outside it says : Just a reminder that my birthday is next week. Inside, it says: That’s all. This has been going on for about 8 yrs now. I’ll be sending it to her in early Dec. We also have a gift bag that goes back and forth. For a long time, the LA county coroners’ sold things to raise money for the DARE program. Everything had the outline of a dead body. I have several things from there, like a doormat. Anyway, the bag is currently in my possession and has some of her birthday prezzies that will get delivered when we go see her in late Nov.
Around that same time, I decided paying for new cards was stupid. Especially when my sister and friends send me such great, funny cards. I told them all that from now on, cards would be re-used and re-sent. We all are still doing that. I might send one from my sister to a friend then get that same card back from my friend. We just cross out the signature.I bought a box of envelopes that fit most greeting cards.
Cards: recycle, reuse, resend. It seems a bunch of us here do that and I love it. I used to work with a woman whose birthday was 2 months after mine. For years, until she left the office (I left shortly after she did) we passed a gift bag back and forth. By the time it was starting to get a tad ragged looking, we’d both moved on. I think she ended up with it.
Those are some really good cards, especially the one to Linda Dean. Very nice. On another note, saw a varied thrush and two chickadees while out walking today.
