Everybody uses algebra all the time. They just don’t notice it when they’re shopping, cooking, measuring, etc

For several years, I taught history, which most teenagers don’t like, and don’t see why they need to know it. One of the things I told them was, it might come in handy if they’re ever a contestant on “Jeopardy!” That seemed to make more sense to them than the fact that knowing the past can often predict what will happen in the future.

You are on a car trip for 450 miles. You are traveling at a rate of 60 miles per hour. Assuming you have enough gas and don’t vary your rate of speed, how long will it take? Can you hold off going to the bathroom that long. Next, it takes you 60 minutes to clean your room. If your sibling, who can do the same job in 30 minutes offers help, how long will take if you both work on it together? If your deposit in the bank of $2365.89 earns 4% per year, compounded quarterly, how long until it becomes $5000?
