I think the same thing is now going on with the PS5. Supposedly because of a computer chip shortage due to the pandemic. Yet they’ve never made enough supply of those at release, so I wonder if it’s not a planned market shortage to keep the price really high.
I have never panicked to buy something for the kids. We bought gifts three to six months out. Our kids never really asked for anything. We spent time together and didn’t need a loan to fund Christmas.

3 consoles and 20+ years later the PS5 is even harder to find. I got one but I don’t know if it was worth the trouble since I rarely even play it.
