When “the board” didn’t approve my 50 cent raise in their budget, I responded with “then I quit”. The boss told me I had to give 2 weeks notice. “No I don’t.” And I walked out. I found a job that paid $2 more an hour about a week later.
I have been lucky never got a notice. However, I have called on lawyer I worked for when he called to say when are you coming back and I said “am I getting my raise” he said no and I said “I quit”. Have a nice holiday. Had a new temp job the next week and a Godsend it was with bonuses that were astronomical at least for me since I had them all learning computers and Gene (one of the owners never wanted me to go) plus the other lawyer who was a partner said the same and Melissa (another lawyer) wanted how I did so well and got information from one of offices we had to deal with. Never mind I didn’t tell her I had to deal with them for my boss, Dean Ford so they knew me well and I got what I wanted.
I once worked for a company that was being bought out and was going to be moved to the US. The new HR person told me I would have a job for three more months during the transition. Then the Director of logistics told me I would be kept on for six more weeks to complete some important customer orders and finally when I met with my new supervisor he told me I would be done in two weeks. I looked at him and said “See that door. I’m done now!” As luck would have it a former VP called me the next day and offered me a job with higher pay and better benefits.
I bought my house in Feb, 1986. Moved in got comfortable and march 1986, was informed the place was being closed down. That really sucked! Short version of the ending…the big man upstairs looks out for his big dummies . My wife and I weathered the storm just fine.
I once made the mistake of giving an employer, a large company, a month’s notice that I was going back to school to study art. They fired me on a pretext the next day. Since I had resigned in writing the day before, I was eventually able to collect unemployment benefits after an administrative hearing. However, the whole house-of-cards plan to go back to college fell apart. I was homeless for a couple of months (at a country fair) and things eventually got better.

I once got my two week notice two days before going on a holiday. Essentially they just said enjoy your holiday and never come back :-/ That sucked.

I was once told that if you work for an hourly wage, that’s how much notice you should give.

Is the donut shop on the other side of the county? If you’re not back two hours, don’t coming back at all.
