Robert L. May created Rudolph in 1939 as an assignment for Chicago-based Montgomery Ward. The retailer had been buying and giving away coloring books for Christmas every year and it was decided that creating their own book would save money. In its first year of publication, Montgomery Ward distributed 2.4 million copies of Rudolph’s story. A thick fog from Lake Michigan gave him the idea of a bright red nose that would shine through fog like a spotlight. The book was first mass-marketed in 1947. The story is owned by The Rudolph Company, LP and has produced sequels, comics, the song (written by Johnny Marks and sung by Gene Autry) TV specials and a movie. Rudolph has also made guest appearances in other Christmas shows and specials. Gene Autry’s recording was No. 1 on the Billboard pop singles chart the week of Christmas 1949 and sold 2.5 million copies the first year. It is the second most popular Christmas song ever, selling over 25 million copies. White Christmas sung by Bing Crosby is the no. 1 with over 50 million copies.

I don’t understand why this is the birth of Rudolph.

Alas, Rudolph can’t turn off his nose so he uses a ruby quartz nose covering to prevent people from being blinded. He takes it off when he works, tho.
That’s some deep X-Men lore for you.
